Shortly after getting past the screen shown above (which took quite a while for me to puzzle out but was totally obvious in retrospect) I was at first surprised that on top of this novel mechanic it seemed like the game was also messing with inter-screen geometry. But now I’ve realized exactly why that only seemed to be the case. A neat discovery, which, again, in retrospect, utterly follows from the apparent rule-set.
[update for future reference: from the pause menu, the middle option returns you to the previous checkpoint. In the main menu, the second option continues your previously saved game. There’s at least one area you can enter before you are equipped to escape it, but thankfully there’s no checkpoint there to accidentally trigger.]
There are some different items too, mostly to help you find your way about. I have to say, this is a fiendish game; it’s too bad it didn’t seem to find an audience.
EDIT: (also the game has about 12 powerups, some clever ideas, and is over in about an hour maybe two)
‘A game where you wander around looking for the goal as a square that can do naught but jump and dash.’
This is super clever.
