Every piece, no matter its orientation, adds 0, 2, 5, or 6 blocks to a given row. However, you can&#039;t ever add an odd number of 5s to a row without leaving some gaps, because of the way the tiles work. (This is pretty hand-wavy, but it should be convincing if you draw the right picture; the gap in the 5 case can only be filled by another 5.) Therefore, the total number of blocks in any row without gaps is always even.
