This has already been made, in fact. I'll send you the link privately so you can test it out if you like! I'm holding off on making it public until I can try out hotseat mode with someone else.

It's intentional, I think. Just like we do, the computer player is designed to fuck up a letter every once in a while, even the first one. And if you mistake the first letter, the game makes you lose the turn immediately without waiting for you to finish the word. Thus explaining why your AI opponent only typed one letter.

My English vocabulary is very tiny, pretty much close to non-existent actually, but I managed to get 3 wins a few times by just typing [REQUIRED FIRST LETTER] plus [RANDOM VOWEL] plus [REQUIRED LAST LETTER].

I must say, a game like this in Spanish (the author's native language) could be pretty interesting, since my trick wouldn't work 'cause we have so few monosyllabic, easy-to-guess words.

I really like scrolling text! (Though this implementation isn't quite smooth enough for easy reading -- at least on my computer -- if you keep your eyes on the right edge of the screen and focus on the words just as they scroll in, I found it legible enough.)

I played twice. Winning strategy is to play words as short as possible. Quick to think and quick to type. Curiously, on my second playthrough, the computer was tasked with playing a word starting with "M" and then flubbed completely, offering the single letter "V" as it's full turn, thus ending the game. A bug or a neat bit of AI stagecraft?
