Fairy Well (Mix256)

Probably the most ambitious 16KB game ever. Pure genius work here. Effectively 3 game modes, 4x 256 screen levels, boss fights, and endless replayability. Superb.[Comment on C64 Scene Database]

  1. Had this come out in the 80s I probably would have played it for months on end. (Unfortunately, I’m not sure I have the patience these days for its brand of procedurally generated maps. I’m fairly skeptical of procedural generation in general — though Spelunky sure avoided its pitfalls — but this ends up feeling a bit like screen after screen of random-ish sameness in a way that makes me wish there were more of an authorial hand. I should mention that I stopped after finding two of the large crystals and hadn’t yet seen any boss fights.)

Note for others: Once you’ve acquired a map, you can access it by holding down the ‘fire’ button for a couple seconds. (I’m pretty sure the only controls are eight joystick directions and the single ‘fire’ button.)

    • Yeah, that’s pretty fair. I played a little more than you did, getting to the final stage, but I found it got quite repetitive, even as it added new enemy types.

      Still, it’s pretty impressive for a 16Kb C64 game :)

      • I played all 4 levels; it actually introduces new enemies and some tougher layouts (and some more music). I can’t say it was worth it though :S
