I got stuck for a while on that one as well, there’s sort of an arrow pointing North but it’s really not obvious.

The tower of hanoi puzzle made me all nostalgic too, haven’t had to solve one of those by hand is ages.

I think it’s because the Japanese map is oriented that way, but I can’t be sure. I just rotated it a couple times til I hit upon it.

That’s what’s confusing me actually, I figured it meant West-East-East-East North-East-West-South then X, but that didn’t work. (I’m probably just missing something stupid…)
