Niña Neuve (Jonathan Whiting)

Puzzles, brawling, boss monsters. A bit like a Zelda game trapped in a 9×9 box. Arrow keys control.[Author's description]

  1. This is excellent. Similarly to Fracuum, it takes a bit to fully understand the implications of the central conceit, with the ‘one room’ concept here seeming at first merely aesthetic but ultimately proving to have a whole series of concrete gameplay implications. Unraveling precisely what those are was very satisfying.

  2. Beautiful game! It’s strange, the page of the game is called Niña Neuve while the in-game text calls her Niña Nueve (which, by the way, is Spanish for Nine Girl, which surely has some meaning?).

  3. Actually, maybe in this case the correct translation would be Girl Nine.

  4. Ah, thanks for spotting the typo. It should be Niña Nueve everywhere! Blame bleary eyed proof-reading after an intense weekend.

  5. I guess nueve makes reference to the fact that the rooms are 9×9 tiles in area.

Nice game. The concept of a small, changing box as a wider space is very appealing to me. Also liked the rooms? floors? where you don’t actually do anything, which serve as a prelude to actual puzzle rooms with the same layout. And the almost minimalist repetition of concepts/challenges. Yes, I liked this a lot.

    • Those empty floors serve a gameplay function as well. Without them, failure on the level immediately below would force you to repeat the one above (during which failure would take you even further up/back). So the empty rooms serve as a clever backstop to all that potential repetition.

  6. I got stuck at one point (The first time the music changes). When I changed floors, the boulder fell behind some glass panes and I couldn’t get to it.

  7. This game does a great job of introducing its mechanics. Many games resort to explaining things with a text box, but here the levels are designed so you can figure out the rules on your own.

    Good music too!
